What is GPA Weighting?
GPA weighting is the process of accounting for credit hours when calculating your grade point average. In a weighted GPA system, courses with more credit hours have a greater impact on your overall GPA than courses with fewer credit hours.
Why Does GPA Weighting Matter?
- Reflects Course Difficulty - Higher-credit courses are typically more demanding
- Accurate Representation - Better reflects your actual academic performance
- Fair Comparison - Allows comparison between students with different course loads
- Institutional Standard - Most universities use weighted GPA for official calculations
Weighted vs Unweighted GPA
Unweighted GPA: All courses count equally. (4.0 + 2.0) ÷ 2 = 3.0
Weighted GPA: Courses weighted by credits. (4.0 × 4 + 2.0 × 1) ÷ 5 = 3.6
How Credit Hours Work
- 1 Credit: Very short course or lab component
- 2-3 Credits: Standard lecture courses
- 4-5 Credits: More demanding courses or lab courses
Strategic Course Planning
- Focus on getting good grades in higher-credit courses
- Balance your course load wisely
- Plan ahead to know which courses are high-credit
